Cozy Home All year long

Over the years I have had the pleasure of hosting a slew of guests into our home, 90% of these guests leave and have commented on how cozy our home is. As someone whose life-goal is to exude coziness, this is the highest and most validating compliment I could receive!

Most of us feel our coziest in the Fall, I’d also say (based on my personal people bubbles) Fall is the favored season across the board and if I had to guess why, it’s that feeling of curling up in fuzzy socks and a sweater while the crisp outside air whistles outside… it’s cozy.

But how can we embody that season all year long, without “betraying” the fun parts of the other 3 seasons ( I will not be curled up in a 90 degree heatwave). I believe it’s in the art of home decoration/styling. Below are things I have implemented in our home that has people leaving feeling “at home” all year long:

Lighting- Take a look at your lights; lamps, sconces, recessed, flush mounts, chandeliers and pendant. Choosing warm lighting for them all is an instant switch from feeling like you’re in a hospital to feeling at home. It is amazing what switching one bulb will do!

Paint- This is another easy switch that can take your place from sterile to inviting. Darker wall colors are great with rooms that have a lot of natural lighting or as an accent wall. I have found that if a room feels too dark, however, it can make the space feel smaller than it is. Brighter, but warm color tones are great for a classic cozy vibe, but don’t be afraid to use colors. I have actually found that using neutrals is fine for a time but it also can lose personality too, so make sure some of your rooms have nice pops of color.

Seating- I want my guests to feel comfortable when they visit, so for me chairs with cushion or padding is important. I also believe an arm chair can add extra coziness to a space. Whether it’s an office, living room or bedroom, it makes me feel like I could get comfy and start reading my favorite books.

Blankets- Even in the summer I have throw blankets in just about every room. Air conditioning can make summer nights chilly, but I also believe that the mere sight of a fuzzy throw can make people feel cozy almost instantly.

Scent- Fresh baked goods can really make you feel comfy in any space, but it’s not realistic to be baking 24/7 ( and if it is, let me know, I’ll be right over). But seriously, the scent of your home can ease people into your space easily. I also try to keep on top of our dog’s smell. I know that my nose is accustomed to any scent he gives off, so I try to keep the fabrics, rugs and carpets as well as air clear from dingy dog smells.

Decor- Something that I feel helps with cozy vibes is how you decorate. There are so many styles that achieve this, I admire those with indoor plants (as I struggle to keep anything green alive!). Books, candles, blankets, can make any space feel extra comfy. But one of my favorite things to decorate with is vintage/vintage-looking pieces. A record player or older radio, china cabinets, thrifted baskets and frames, even a bread box in the kitchen can offer a nostalgic and comfy vibe.

I hope you find your way to a cozier space soon, filled with warmth and love. Until next time!
